Yes. Many people can get life insurance after a heart attack, and many qualify for far better coverage than they expect. The single biggest factor isn’t the heart attack itself. It’s how long ago it happened and how well you’ve recovered.

Here’s what I tell every client: timing is everything. Six months after a heart attack, your options can look very different than they do two years or five years later. Knowing where you sit on that timeline, and what changes when, can save you a lot of money and get your family real coverage.

You’re far from alone. The CDC reports that about 805,000 people in the U.S. have a heart attack every year, about one every 40 seconds. Of those, about 605,000 are first heart attacks. Underwriters see heart history every single day, and many survivors go on to qualify.

Why this matters for your family

I lost my wife in 2017 and raised our children on my own. I know what it means when a family suddenly loses a parent and a paycheck. A heart attack is often the moment people realize how close that can come. I never want “I had a heart attack, so nobody will cover me” to be the reason a family goes unprotected.

Here’s the hard truth I share gently: the CDC notes that about 200,000 heart attacks each year happen to people who have already had one. That’s why getting the right coverage in place, at the right time, matters so much. Read more in my guide to family life insurance.

Why timing is everything after a heart attack

This is the part most people never hear. On some simplified-issue plans for seniors, the time since your heart attack may change your options like this:

  • Less than 2 years ago: Some plans may offer a graded benefit. On some of these plans, if you pass away from natural causes in the first 2 years, your family gets back the premiums paid plus interest. From year 3, the full benefit is paid. Accidental death is often covered in full from day one.
  • 2 to 5 years ago: Some plans may offer standard rates with full coverage from day one. No waiting period.
  • More than 5 years ago: Some plans may not ask about it at all, which can mean the best (preferred) rate those plans offer.

The same pattern often applies to stents, angioplasty, bypass surgery, angina, valve surgery and pacemakers on some plans. Fully underwritten term and IUL policies may treat heart history differently; they usually look closely at your recovery, test results and current heart function rather than just the date.

The takeaway: if your heart attack was a while ago, you may qualify for much better than you think. And if it was recent, there are still options today, with a plan to upgrade later.

What underwriters look at after a heart attack

Every company has its own rules, but most look at the same things:

  • Time since your heart attack. Many traditional companies want to see at least several months, often longer, of stable recovery before offering coverage.
  • Your age when it happened. A heart attack at a younger age is often viewed more cautiously than one later in life.
  • How your heart is working now. Results like your ejection fraction, stress tests and echocardiograms matter.
  • What treatment you had. Stents, angioplasty or bypass, and whether you’ve had symptoms since.
  • Follow-up care. Regular cardiologist visits, cardiac rehab and taking your medications as prescribed all help.
  • Related conditions. Blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and weight are looked at together with your heart history.
  • Tobacco use. Smoking after a heart attack is one of the biggest red flags for underwriters.

How a heart attack affects your rate class

As a general guide (every company and plan is different):

  • Recent heart attack (within the last several months): Many traditional companies postpone. Some simplified plans for seniors may offer a graded benefit.
  • Recovered and stable, 1 to 2+ years out, good test results: Traditional coverage is often possible, usually with a table rating (a higher price, not a decline). Shopping makes a big difference.
  • Several years out, strong heart function, no further events, risk factors controlled: Better table ratings, and occasionally standard rates with some traditional companies. Some simplified plans for seniors may offer their best rate after 5+ years.
  • Heart attack plus heart failure, ongoing chest pain or multiple events: Much harder. Congestive heart failure is commonly disqualifying on many simplified plans, and guaranteed-issue may be the main option.

Which type of coverage fits?

Term life insurance usually gives the most protection for the lowest cost while your kids are growing and the mortgage is being paid. See term life insurance with living benefits.

Indexed universal life (IUL) can protect your family for life and build cash value that’s protected from market losses by a 0% floor. Try the free IUL calculator.

For seniors (about 60 to 65 and up), simplified plans with just a few health questions are often the sweet spot after a heart attack. Even a graded plan on some simplified policies can be a better deal than a guaranteed-issue plan with a 2-year wait, and once you’re 2+ years out, you may qualify for full coverage from day one. I compare them in my guide to life insurance for seniors and in Can I get life insurance over 50, 60 or 70?

The mistake I see most often: someone who had a heart attack years ago assumes they’re “uninsurable,” buys a guaranteed-issue policy off TV, pays more for less coverage, and gets a waiting period they never needed.

Can you get living benefits after a heart attack?

Sometimes. Many policies include living benefits that may let you use part of your death benefit early for a qualifying terminal, chronic or critical illness. After a heart attack, a company may limit or exclude the critical-illness benefit for heart conditions, but terminal and chronic illness benefits may still be available. Ask before you apply. 6 ways to get a better rate after a heart attack

  1. Know your dates. The month and year of your heart attack and any procedures can change which plans you qualify for.
  2. Complete cardiac rehab and keep your follow-ups. Steady care with your cardiologist shows up in your records.
  3. Take your medications as prescribed. Consistency counts in your favor.
  4. Quit tobacco. It’s one of the biggest things you can do for your heart and your rate.
  5. Be completely honest. Prescription and medical history are checked. Surprises cause problems.
  6. Work with an independent agent. Companies treat heart history very differently. One may postpone you while another offers coverage today.

Rates rise every year you wait. See how much in life insurance cost by age. Frequently asked questions

How long after a heart attack can I get life insurance?

It depends on the company and plan. Some simplified plans for seniors may offer a graded benefit right away, while many traditional companies want to see several months to a year or more of stable recovery. The longer it’s been, the better your options usually get.

Can I be denied life insurance after a heart attack?

You may be postponed if it was very recent, or declined if there’s heart failure or ongoing symptoms. But one company’s decline isn’t the final word. Many survivors qualify somewhere.

What is a graded death benefit?

On some plans, if you pass away from natural causes in the first 2 years, your family receives the premiums you paid plus interest. From year 3, the full benefit is paid. Accidental death is often covered in full from day one.

Do stents or bypass surgery count the same as a heart attack?

On many simplified plans for seniors, they’re asked about in the same question and follow a similar timeline. Traditional policies look at your full heart history and how you’ve recovered.

Should I keep my current policy or apply for a new one?

Never cancel a policy you have until new coverage is approved and in force. Sometimes the best move is adding coverage, not replacing it.

How much life insurance does my family need?
