Yes, you can get life insurance with no medical exam. Many people today get approved by answering health questions while the insurance company checks records like prescription history, instead of sending a nurse to draw blood. The catch: the less the company learns about your health, the more it usually charges or the less coverage it offers, so “no exam” is not always the cheapest path.

I’m Cory Levine, an independent life insurance agent in Boca Raton, FL, and I help families all over the country with this exact question. Below is the plain-English version of how no-exam life insurance works, so you can choose with your eyes open.

How does life insurance with no medical exam work?

With a traditional policy, a paramedical examiner usually takes your height, weight, blood pressure, and blood and urine samples. With no-exam coverage, the insurance company skips that visit and decides based on:

  • Your application answers (health history, medications, tobacco, family history, lifestyle).
  • Records it is allowed to check with your permission, which can include prescription history, your driving record, and your file with MIB, a database insurers use to share underwriting information from past applications. (MIB)
  • Sometimes a phone interview to go over your answers.

If everything lines up, you can often be approved much faster than with a full exam. If something doesn’t line up, the company may ask for an exam anyway, offer a different rate, or decline.

What are the types of no-exam life insurance?

“No medical exam” is really three different things. Knowing which one you are looking at matters more than anything else on this page.

TypeHealth questions?Who it fitsTrade-off
Accelerated underwritingYes, full applicationHealthier people who want fast approvalIf records raise questions, you may be asked for an exam after all
Simplified issueYes, a shorter listPeople with some health history who want to skip the examUsually costs more per dollar of coverage, often lower maximum amounts
Guaranteed issueNoPeople who can’t qualify any other waySmall coverage amounts, highest cost, and usually a waiting period before the full benefit pays for illness

Is no-exam life insurance more expensive?

It can be. The insurance company is taking on more uncertainty, so it usually prices that in. The New York Department of Financial Services puts it plainly: guaranteed issue policies are appropriate for people with medical problems, but healthy consumers will generally get lower rates by taking the medical exam that traditional policies require. Their advice: don’t buy a guaranteed issue policy if you are healthy. (NY DFS Life Insurance guide)

That doesn’t mean no-exam is a bad deal. For many healthy people, accelerated underwriting comes in at the same price as a fully underwritten policy. The point is to compare before you decide, not after. You can see what your price looks like in about two minutes with my free term life insurance quote tool.

Can I get life insurance with no medical exam and no waiting period?

Often, yes. Accelerated and simplified issue policies typically pay the full death benefit from day one once approved. The waiting period mostly shows up with guaranteed issue policies, the “no health questions” kind you see advertised on TV. Many of those only refund premiums (sometimes plus interest) if death from illness happens in the first couple of years, and pay the full amount only for accidental death during that time.

Before you buy one of those, read is guaranteed issue life insurance worth it. Many people who assume they need guaranteed issue actually qualify for first-day coverage.

Can seniors get life insurance with no medical exam?

Yes. No-exam options are common for people in their 50s, 60s and 70s, especially for final expense and smaller whole life policies. Coverage amounts and choices narrow as you get older, so the earlier you look, the more options you usually have. See my guides on life insurance over 50, 60 or 70 and senior life insurance with living benefits.

Buying coverage on a mom or dad? The same rules apply, and your parent must know about and agree to the policy. Here’s how that works: life insurance for parents.

Can I get life insurance with no medical exam if I have health problems?

Many people can. Conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes don’t automatically push you into guaranteed issue. Each company looks at health conditions differently, which is why shopping several companies matters. If you want a private read on where you might land before you apply, take my free health check.

Do I have to tell the truth if there’s no exam?

Yes, and this is the part people underestimate. Skipping the exam does not mean skipping the review. Insurers can check records before approval, and after a policy is issued there is usually a contestable period (in New York, for example, two years from the issue date) when the company can challenge a claim if it finds a material misrepresentation on the application. (NY DFS)

A wrong answer, even an honest mistake, could put your family’s payout at risk. Answer every question completely. If you’re unsure how to answer something, ask before you submit.

How do I choose: exam or no exam?

  • You’re healthy and want the lowest price: compare accelerated underwriting with a fully underwritten quote. Sometimes the exam saves real money, especially on larger policies.
  • You have some health history and want to skip needles: simplified issue may fit, but compare it against what you’d get with an exam.
  • You’ve been declined elsewhere: guaranteed issue is a last resort, not a first choice. Look closely at the waiting period.
  • You want coverage you can use while you’re alive: ask about term life insurance with living benefits or life insurance with living benefits.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get term life insurance without a medical exam?

Yes. Many term policies are available through accelerated or simplified underwriting. Approval and maximum coverage depend on your age, health and the amount you apply for.

How much life insurance can I get without a medical exam?

It varies by company, age and type of policy. Guaranteed issue policies are usually small, often meant for final expenses. Accelerated and simplified policies can go much higher. I can tell you what’s realistic for you on a quick call.

Is no-exam life insurance worth it?

It’s worth it when it gets you the right coverage at a fair price. It’s not worth it if you’re healthy and paying more than you would with an exam, or if a waiting period leaves your family exposed.

Will my MIB file affect a no-exam application?

It can. If you’ve applied for individually underwritten life or health coverage in the last seven years, you may have an MIB file. You can request a free copy once a year to check it for errors. (MIB)
