Usually, yes. Many people with anxiety or depression get life insurance, and those with mild, well-managed symptoms often qualify for standard rates or better. Taking medication or seeing a therapist usually isn’t a problem on its own. What matters most is how severe it is and how stable you’ve been.

A lot of people never apply because they’re worried a diagnosis will be held against them. That worry keeps families unprotected for no reason. Underwriters see anxiety and depression every day.

You’re far from alone. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that in 2022, 59.3 million U.S. adults, about 23%, had a mental illness.

Why this matters for your family

I lost my wife in 2017 and have raised my children on my own since. I know grief, stress and hard seasons firsthand. Getting help for your mental health is a strength, and it shouldn’t stand between your family and the protection they need.

What underwriters look at

  • Diagnosis and severity. Mild, situational anxiety or depression is viewed very differently from severe or complex conditions.
  • Treatment. Medications, therapy, and how well your treatment is working.
  • Stability. How long you’ve been stable, and whether you’ve had recent changes in medication.
  • Daily life. Whether it has affected your ability to work.
  • Hospital stays. Any inpatient treatment, and how long ago it was.
  • Substance use. Alcohol or drug use is looked at closely alongside mental health.

How it affects your rate class

As a general guide (every company is different):

  • Mild, well-controlled, working normally, on one medication or none: Preferred or standard rates are often possible.
  • Moderate, managed with treatment, stable for a while: Standard rates are common.
  • Severe, recent hospital stay, or not working because of symptoms: Expect a higher rating, or a postponement until things are stable.

Companies treat mental health very differently, so one company’s standard can be another’s preferred.

Which type of coverage fits?

Term life insurance usually gives the most protection for the lowest cost while your family depends on your income. See term life insurance with living benefits and real prices for your 40s and your 50s.

Indexed universal life (IUL) can protect your family for life and build cash value that’s protected from market losses by a 0% floor. See how IUL works.

If traditional coverage isn’t available yet, simplified or guaranteed-issue policies can fill the gap. Guaranteed-issue plans usually have a waiting period, so they’re best as a backup, not a first choice. Read Is guaranteed issue life insurance worth it?

5 ways to get a better rate

  1. Stay on your treatment plan. Consistency shows stability.
  2. Know your details. Your diagnosis, medications, dosage changes and how long you’ve been stable.
  3. Keep up with your doctor or therapist. Regular care is a positive sign, not a negative one.
  4. Be completely honest. Prescription records are checked. Surprises cause problems.
  5. Work with an independent agent. I can point you to companies that treat your situation fairly.

Frequently asked questions

Does taking an antidepressant raise my rate?

Not necessarily. Many people on a single medication for mild to moderate symptoms still qualify for good rates.

Does seeing a therapist hurt my application?

No. Therapy is a normal part of care, and it often shows you’re managing your health well.

Should I wait to apply?

If you just started or changed treatment, a few months of stability can sometimes help. If you’re stable now, there’s usually no reason to wait.

Do I have to answer mental health questions?

Yes. Applications ask, and prescription records are reviewed. Honest answers protect your family’s claim.
