For a healthy non-smoker in their 40s, $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance can cost about $32 to $81 a month in the best rate class. Where you land depends mostly on your exact age, your health and whether you use tobacco. The real rates below come straight from a top-rated company’s quote system, not from an online average.

Your 40s are when most people finally sit down and think about this. The kids are growing, the mortgage is real, and you start to realize how much your family depends on your paycheck. The good news: it’s still very affordable. The catch: every birthday makes it cost more.

Real term life insurance rates in your 40s
These are monthly prices for a 20-year term policy for a Florida resident, pulled on October 16, 2026. “Best class” is the healthiest rate class. “Standard” is a typical healthy non-smoker who doesn’t quite make the top class.
| Age | $500K best class | $500K standard | $1M best class | $1M standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Man, 40 | $38.72 | $71.72 | $68.20 | $130.68 |
| Man, 45 | $58.08 | $108.68 | $107.80 | $200.20 |
| Man, 49 | $80.96 | $151.80 | $153.56 | $285.56 |
| Woman, 40 | $32.12 | $58.52 | $55.00 | $105.16 |
| Woman, 45 | $46.64 | $82.28 | $84.92 | $150.92 |
| Woman, 49 | $62.48 | $110.00 | $115.72 | $207.24 |
Your age for insurance is usually your age at your nearest birthday, so if you’re 44 and a half, many companies price you as 45.
Why waiting even a few years costs you
Look at the same healthy man in the table. At 40, $500,000 of 20-year coverage in the best class is $38.72 a month. At 45, it’s $58.08, about 50% more. At 49, it’s $80.96, more than double.
And that’s if your health stays perfect. In your 40s, this is often when blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar start to show up at checkups. A new diagnosis can move you out of the best class, which can matter even more than age. If that’s already you, read Can I get life insurance with high blood pressure?, high cholesterol, diabetes or sleep apnea.
How smoking or vaping changes the price
Tobacco is the single biggest price jump. Here’s the same $500,000, 20-year policy at standard tobacco rates:
- Man: $204.16 at 40, $324.28 at 45, $447.04 at 49
- Woman: $158.40 at 40, $239.80 at 45, $329.56 at 49
That’s about five times the best-class price, and about three times the standard price. Most companies define tobacco broadly, including vaping, chewing tobacco and nicotine replacement. If you quit, many companies will reconsider you for non-tobacco rates after 12 months. Read more in Can I get life insurance if I smoke or vape?
20-year or 30-year term in your 40s?
Pick the length that covers your biggest responsibilities: until the youngest child is on their own and the mortgage is paid down. For a healthy 45-year-old man, $500,000 in the best class costs:
- 10-year term: $33.00 a month
- 20-year term: $58.08 a month
- 30-year term: $107.80 a month
A 20-year term takes most people in their 40s into their mid-60s, which is often the sweet spot. Some families split it: one 20-year and one 30-year policy, so coverage steps down as the kids grow and the mortgage shrinks. If you’d rather have coverage that never runs out and builds cash value, look at indexed universal life (IUL).
How much coverage do you need in your 40s?
A common starting point is enough to replace your income for the years your family would need it, plus your mortgage, debts and your kids’ education. For many families in their 40s, that lands somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million or more.

Why this matters to me
I lost my wife in 2017 and have raised my children on my own since. I know exactly what it means when a family loses a parent in the middle of these years. That’s why I want every family in their 40s to lock in coverage while it’s still this affordable, and to get it right the first time.
Many term policies today also include living benefits, which may let you use part of your coverage early for a qualifying serious illness. In your 40s, that protection can matter as much as the death benefit.

Frequently asked questions
Is 45 too old to buy term life insurance?
No. Term life is widely available in your 40s and well beyond. Prices are higher than in your 30s, but a healthy 45-year-old can still get $500,000 of 20-year coverage for about $47 to $58 a month in the best class, based on the rates above.
Do I need a medical exam in my 40s?
Not always. Many healthy applicants in their 40s can qualify without an exam. If your health is excellent, an exam can sometimes earn you a better price.
Why are rates for women lower?
Women live longer on average, so companies charge them less for the same coverage. In the table above, a 45-year-old woman pays about 20% less than a 45-year-old man in the best class.
Should I buy life insurance through work instead?
Work coverage is a nice bonus, but it’s usually limited and often ends if you leave your job. Read more about life insurance through work.
How do rates change as I get older?
They rise every year, and faster as you age. Compare the real rates in your 30s, your 50s and your 60s, or see the full picture in life insurance cost by age.
