In your 60s, life insurance is usually about protecting a spouse, paying off what’s left on the house, covering final expenses or leaving something behind. The right answer depends on how long you need the coverage.

Real term life insurance rates in your 60s

These are real monthly prices for a Florida resident, pulled on October 16, 2026. “Best class” is the healthiest rate class. “Standard” is a typical healthy non-smoker who doesn’t quite make the top class. Prices below are for a 10-year term.

Age$250K best class$250K standard$500K best class$500K standard
Man, 60$68.20$121.00$124.08$219.12
Man, 65$111.32$190.52$214.72$349.36
Man, 69$174.46$297.88$333.52$554.84
Woman, 60$49.50$82.06$88.44$151.36

Woman, 69$115.94$191.62$215.60$373.12

Your age for insurance is usually your age at your nearest birthday, so a few months before your birthday, many companies already price you at the next age.

How long a term can you get in your 60s?

Shorter terms stay available longer. At this company, a 20-year term was available at 60 and 65, but at 69 only 10- and 15-year terms were offered. For a healthy 65-year-old man, $250,000 in the best class costs:

  • 10-year term: $111.32 a month
  • 15-year term: $155.76 a month
  • 20-year term: $241.12 a month

Why waiting costs more in your 60s

Same healthy man, $250,000, 10-year term, best class: $68.20 a month at 60, $111.32 at 65 and $174.46 at 69, about 2.6 times the price. A new health diagnosis can raise it even more.

How smoking changes the price

Here’s the same $250,000, 10-year policy at standard tobacco rates:

  • Man: $343.86 at 60, $538.12 at 65, $787.60 at 69
  • Woman: $269.28 at 60, $417.34 at 65, $600.38 at 69

Term or permanent coverage in your 60s?

Term fits when you need a large amount for a set time: the last years of a mortgage, or protecting a spouse until retirement savings are settled.

Permanent coverage fits when you want it to last for life: final expenses, a guaranteed inheritance, or estate planning. Term can run out before you do. Read Can I get life insurance over 50, 60 or 70? and Is guaranteed issue life insurance worth it for seniors?, or see my senior life insurance page.

If you’re near or in retirement, protecting what you’ve saved matters too. See 401(k) rollovers and annuities and what a market crash does to your 401(k) near retirement.

Why this matters to me

I lost my wife in 2017 and have raised my children on my own since. I know exactly what it means when a family loses a parent and a paycheck. That’s why I want every family to lock in coverage while it’s affordable, and to get it right the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 65-year-old get term life insurance?

Yes. A healthy 65-year-old can get $250,000 of 10-year coverage for about $75.68 to $111.32 a month in the best class, based on the rates above.

Is term or final expense better for seniors?

It depends on what you’re covering. Term gives more coverage for a set time. Final expense is smaller but lasts for life. Many healthy seniors qualify for better options than the TV plans with a two-year wait.

Do I need a medical exam in my 60s?

Not always. Some policies only ask health questions, but if you’re healthy, an exam can sometimes earn a better price.

How does cost change after 60?
