For a healthy non-smoker in their 50s, $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance can cost about $67.76 to $224.40 a month in the best rate class. Prices climb faster in your 50s than in any decade before, so the year you buy matters. The real rates below come straight from a top-rated company’s quote system.

In your 50s, the question changes. The kids may be older, but there’s still a mortgage, a spouse who depends on your income, and retirement savings that aren’t finished yet. Term life protects all of that until you get there.

Real term life insurance rates in your 50s
These are real monthly prices for a Florida resident, pulled on October 16, 2026. “Best class” is the healthiest rate class. “Standard” is a typical healthy non-smoker who doesn’t quite make the top class. Prices below are for a 20-year term.
| Age | $500K best class | $500K standard | $1M best class | $1M standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Man, 50 | $88.88 | $165.88 | $168.52 | $313.72 |
| Man, 55 | $149.60 | $269.72 | $284.68 | $526.68 |
| Man, 59 | $224.40 | $403.92 | $431.64 | $795.96 |
| Woman, 50 | $67.76 | $118.36 | $126.28 | $224.84 |
| Woman, 55 | $106.92 | $180.84 | $202.84 | $355.08 |
| Woman, 59 | $156.20 | $270.16 | $298.76 | $527.56 |
Your age for insurance is usually your age at your nearest birthday, so a few months before your birthday, many companies already price you at the next age.
Why every year counts in your 50s
Same healthy man, same $500,000, 20-year term, best class: $88.88 a month at 50, $149.60 at 55 and $224.40 at 59. That’s about 2.5 times the price in nine years.
Health matters even more now. Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and heart issues often show up in this decade. If that’s you, read high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea or after a heart attack.
10, 15 or 20 years?
Match the term to what you’re protecting: the mortgage payoff, your spouse’s income needs, or the years until retirement savings can stand on their own. For a healthy 55-year-old man, $500,000 in the best class costs:
- 10-year term: $78.32 a month
- 15-year term: $102.96 a month
- 20-year term: $149.60 a month
At this company, a 30-year term was still available at 55 but not at 59. Longer terms close off as you age.
How smoking or vaping changes the price
Here’s the same $500,000, 20-year policy at standard tobacco rates:
- Man: $486.64 at 50, $763.40 at 55, $1,023.44 at 59
- Woman: $358.16 at 50, $558.36 at 55, $799.48 at 59
If you quit, many companies will reconsider you for non-tobacco rates after 12 months. Read more in Can I get life insurance if I smoke or vape?
Term, or something permanent?
In your 50s, many people want protection and a plan for retirement. Term is the lowest cost for a set number of years. If you want coverage for life that can also build tax-advantaged cash value, look at indexed universal life (IUL). Read Should I get whole life, IUL or term?

Why this matters to me
I lost my wife in 2017 and have raised my children on my own since. I know exactly what it means when a family loses a parent and a paycheck. That’s why I want every family to lock in coverage while it’s affordable, and to get it right the first time.
Many term policies also include living benefits, which may let you use part of your coverage early for a qualifying serious illness. In your 50s, that can matter as much as the death benefit.

Frequently asked questions
Is 55 too old for term life insurance?
No. A healthy 55-year-old can still get $500,000 of 20-year coverage for about $106.92 to $149.60 a month in the best class, based on the rates above.
Do I still need life insurance if my kids are grown?
Often, yes, if someone depends on your income, there’s a mortgage, or you want to protect your spouse’s retirement. Read How do I protect my family with life insurance?
Do I need a medical exam in my 50s?
Not always. Many healthy applicants can qualify without one, but an exam can sometimes earn a better price.
