For a healthy non-smoker in their 30s, $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance can cost about $21.56 to $36.08 a month in the best rate class. That’s about 70 cents to $1.20 a day, for coverage that protects your family while the kids are small and the mortgage is new. The real rates below come straight from a top-rated company’s quote system.

Real term life insurance rates in your 30s
These are real monthly prices for a Florida resident, pulled on October 16, 2026. “Best class” is the healthiest rate class. “Standard” is a typical healthy non-smoker who doesn’t quite make the top class. Prices below are for a 20-year term.
| Age | $500K best class | $500K standard | $1M best class | $1M standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Man, 30 | $25.96 | $46.20 | $43.56 | $82.28 |
| Man, 35 | $28.60 | $50.16 | $47.08 | $91.08 |
| Man, 39 | $36.08 | $66.44 | $62.92 | $121.00 |
| Woman, 30 | $21.56 | $38.28 | $35.64 | $67.32 |
| Woman, 35 | $24.64 | $44.00 | $39.16 | $77.00 |
| Woman, 39 | $30.36 | $55.00 | $51.48 | $99.00 |
Your age for insurance is usually your age at your nearest birthday, so a few months before your birthday, many companies already price you at the next age.
Should I get a 30-year term in my 30s?
For many young families, yes. A 30-year term bought at 30 covers you until 60, which usually takes you past the last child leaving home and most of the mortgage. Here’s a healthy 35-year-old man, $500,000, best class:
- 10-year term: $19.36 a month
- 20-year term: $28.60 a month
- 30-year term: $44.44 a month
The 30-year costs more each month, but it locks today’s health and today’s age in for three decades. If you’d rather have coverage that never runs out and builds cash value, your 30s are also the best time to start an indexed universal life (IUL) policy.
What waiting until 39 really costs
Same healthy man, same $500,000. A 20-year term in the best class is $25.96 a month at 30 and $36.08 at 39, about 39% more. A 30-year term goes from $39.60 to $60.72, about 53% more. And that assumes your health doesn’t change, which is the bigger risk.
How smoking or vaping changes the price
Here’s the same $500,000, 20-year policy at standard tobacco rates:
- Man: $116.16 at 30, $135.96 at 35, $187.44 at 39
- Woman: $86.24 at 30, $109.12 at 35, $146.08 at 39
That’s roughly four to five times the best-class price. Most companies count vaping and nicotine products as tobacco. If you quit, many companies will reconsider you for non-tobacco rates after 12 months. Read more in Can I get life insurance if I smoke or vape?
How much coverage do you need in your 30s?
Most young families need more than they think: years of income, the mortgage, childcare and college. For many families in their 30s, $500,000 to $1 million is a common range. Don’t skip the parent who stays home. Replacing childcare and everything they do costs real money. See Does a stay-at-home parent need life insurance?
Why this matters to me
I lost my wife in 2017 and have raised my children on my own since. I know exactly what it means when a family loses a parent and a paycheck. That’s why I want every family to lock in coverage while it’s affordable, and to get it right the first time.
Many term policies today also include living benefits, which may let you use part of your coverage early for a qualifying serious illness.

Is work life insurance enough in my 30s?
Usually not. It’s often only one or two times your salary and may end if you change jobs. Read Is life insurance through work enough?
